COCOROOM

This area is called Kamagasaki in Nishinari Ward of Osaka. But it doesn’t appear on a map. There are three major temporary workers’ markets in Japan and Kamagasaki is the biggest.(0.09:)

Man A: Oops, sorry.(0.38:)

I am hoping that our activity provides a meeting point for young people who have difficulties to find jobs due to various mental problems and developmental disorders. At the same time, we take extra care for any co-dependency that may occur between us by employing art where everyone participates. So our relationship is not divided between supporting and supported, but those who appreciate for our support could… Here he comes! Welcome!(0.50)

Man B: Sorry I made you surprise.
Man C: Kanayo is taking an interview now. So be quiet, will you?

Kanayo: So they could for example sing songs or paint pictures, while we also present our artworks just as equal participants. So our relationship becomes equal through producing something artistic. Can you be little quieter. Mr. Ando? You are too loud.

Mr. Ando: It’s not me, but this doll’s talking too loud.
Kanayo: I see, so it’s not you, then.
Mr. Ando: Yeah, it’s the doll’s fault.
Kanayo: Ok, I see the doll is talking.

Man D: Thanks very much. Man E: We used to have lots of jobs here in Kamagasaki. A lot of young ones who quit the Self Defence Army (SDA) came here, too. I came here at the age of 21, but even then, lots of them came here after their contracts ended with the SDA.(3.23)

We are not specialists of any fields such as law, medicine and social welfare. But that fact has been working well for us because we hastily find solutions together like “that person might know something, so let’s go ask”. We are both amateurs and because of that, we walk together and to relate each other to help each other. And I think it’s ok to have such a way of support.(3.46)

Bonne à petite. Wow, it’s nice rice! Thanks! Bitter gourds grows well, I heard.(4.24)

Communal Kitchen

You know when you supply free food for homeless people, we call it ‘communal kitchen’ / since we cook together. (0.09) I once wondered how much it would cost to prepare a meal. So I calculated. Supposing 300 people came, it was only 15 yen per person. With that amount one person could eat as much as s/he wants. (0.21) The cost of ingredients is about 15 yen. So, with the budget of 3000 to 4500 yen including other costs, we can fulfil 300 stomachs. (0.34) If this current precarious working condition remains to infest many young people like we saw today, they will all end up on the street. But if one could cook a meal for 15 yen, it is kinda big hope for us…(0.50)

My paintings are about Shiro, the white cat and his home. This one I painted a scene where Shiro was abandoned under Sakura-bashi bridge. There, many of our ‘friends’ live in camping tents. So Shiro started his life with them. He’s so cute. (0.49)

At first, I introduced Shiro to lots of ‘fathers’. For example, this man, he survives by selling discarded tins and cans he collected. Some survive by selling copper taken out of wires and cables, others go to work before dawn. (1.13. )

This one is about Shiro and the moment of cicada’s hatch. I had never such a scene before, but it was when we were guarding the area since one of guys got attacked by a group of strangers several times. It was such an emotional moment so I painted the scene. (1.31.)

Or these are the guys who take Shiro out on their bicycles. For example, this one is about going to free food supply in winter and they sometimes come to this welfare centre with Shiro as well. (1.51)

And if see the paintings over there, these scenes when they got evacuated from Sakura-bashi bridge. So we were compelled to migrate to elsewhere and moved all the possessions together. (2.07)

Actually, this is not the end. I wanted to conclude this exhibition with the painting I’m currently working on. You know the Tokyo Skytree, the new landmark tower, right? It’s been constructed near here. As it gets taller and taller, the gentrification of this area also intensifies. So I decided to depict a scene where our friends battle against bureaucrats from the city council to send a message that here is the home for our friends and Shiro despite the hardship. But it’s such a hard work and I couldn’t finish it before the exhibition. I’m charging energy, right now. (2.40)

San’ya Summer Festival Part 1

While so many of us have fought against Yakuza, lack of work and the residents who want to kick us out from this neighbourhood, we’ve organised this summer festival for many years So many of us started living on streets as we’ve been suffering from lack of work. So, it’s been survival for the last 10 years. But we must all unite and have pride in a way no others can and go through this hardship together and die peacefully in this place. (1.08) Today and tomorrow, we celebrate and enjoy our summer festival together with those who died. Drink, sing and get together!(2.21) Here comes Oolong Tea. We can finally mix shochu with it! We must unite in order to survive this year again! Cheers!(2.41)
